It was another big result for us against Preston last Saturday – and I’m not just talking about the scoreline.
The boys look on fire in front of goal at the moment and perhaps the same can now be said of me after I opened my account for the club!
There’s been a bit of banter going around from the lads who have scored this season, against the lads who haven’t, so I’ve swapped teams after Saturday. Now I can join in and gang up on Matt Taylor and Chris Solly!
After the game, the gaffer emphasised the importance of players finding the net from all areas of the pitch and it’s something we’re well aware of.
We’ve looked particularly threatening from set-pieces this season – Danny Green and Johnnie Jackson take great corners.
For my goal, the ball fell to me in the box after Bradley Wright-Phillips’ shot was blocked and I took a swing at it with my left foot – fortunately, it went in.
However, I’m just as interested in Preston’s goals and we were frustrated to concede two late on. At half-time, when we were 4-0 up, we were determined to keep a clean sheet because as a defender I want to have the best defensive record in the league.
To be four goals ahead at half-time is important because it shows we’re taking on board what we’ve been talking about at the training ground.
We conceded early on against the likes of Tranmere and Stevenage in October, so we’ve been speaking about getting off to a positive start.
There’s a long way to go but the lads know that and we all understand that you don’t win anything before Christmas.
Before the start of the season, there were a few questions about the number of players brought in and whether everyone could gel but I think you’re seeing the fruits of our hard work on the pitch.
It’s the FA Cup on Sunday, at FC Halifax Town, and we won’t be under-estimating our opposition.
There are plenty of players in the squad who have played non-league football, such as Matty and myself, so we know what a big game it is.
We want to go there, be professional and return with the minimum of fuss.
