New Charlton Athletic boss Chris Powell believes the club's fans will be realistic over how quickly he can deliver success.

Powell took charge of the Addicks on Monday - having watched Saturday's 2-2 draw at Sheffield Wednesday from the stands - with the club one point outside the League 1 play-off places.

“A lot of hard work lies ahead for me," admitted Powell, who has taken on his first managerial role. "It's a chance for us to rebuild and move forward.

"I know exactly what the fans are thinking and how they feel for the club. I know the journey they've been through.

"We've got to realise we've got a journey ahead of us - it may be bumpy along the way and we've got to be ready for that.

“I think they will be realistic. They know my character and what I am about.

“I’d look for them to give us time. We need to be together – the players and the fans. Charlton has always been built on that.

“We need them to believe in me and, of course, I have to produce a team that does that for them.”

Powell will keep caretaker boss Keith Peacock and development coach Damian Matthew in his backroom team while he tries to appoint an assistant.

“It’s been quite a whirlwind for me and I’ve had to get my head together about what lies ahead,” he conceded. “I've got three or four names in my head and I have to make a decision soon.

“Keith and Damian’s knowledge and experience will be invaluable to me at the minute.”
