When I first joined Charlton, I wasn’t fully fit, and even though I was scoring goals, I couldn’t really control the ball because I was catching up fitness-wise.

My all-round game needed to improve and this season it is a lot better, although I am still trying to work on it.

As a striker, you’re always going to get a chance and I’ve always been taught to hit the target toward the corner of the goal.

If fans expect me to score, I see that as a compliment but I feel like I have to score for the lads, anyway. That’s my job.

I’ve scored seven goals so far this season and I have a target for the campaign – not that I intend to tell anyone. My targets are personal but it should come as no surprise that the general aim is to score as many goals as possible!

I’m lucky in a lot of ways that my dad, Ian Wright, can give me advice from his experiences with the likes of Arsenal and England.

He always tells me the truth and even if I think that I’ve done well in a match, he will always find an area in which I can improve.

I had a chance against MK Dons last month, for example, when I tried to flick the ball toward goal from a cross but it went through my legs. He just told me to forget about doing those kinds of things and to concentrate on hitting the target.

The fans who travelled to Bramall Lane at the start of the month will probably have seen I was laughing when I scored against Sheffield United – but no one was laughing after we lost to Stevenage last Saturday.

The goal in Yorkshire was probably the luckiest of my career. I couldn’t believe how I scored it because the ball bounced perfectly back to me in front of an empty net after the goalkeeper had saved my first effort.

That’s why I was laughing as I scored – and we’re looking to put a smile back on supporters’ faces this weekend against Carlisle United after our first league loss of the season.

We’re still top of the table, though, and I just wish the season would end now because then we’d be promoted.

There are a lot of games to go but we are well placed and have a good squad.
