Saturday was my first competitive match for Charlton and my main objective was to get three points and get us off to a good start.
It wasn’t nice playing against my friends, because I was at Bournemouth for five years and had a close bond with the fans.
I had some great times there and I’d never change a thing but I felt it was the right time in my life to move on.
My partner is due to give birth to three girls in mid-September and I needed to move nearer to my family but it was a football decision because Charlton are a big club. When I signed, I was told they would be looking to be near the top end of the table, and it was a challenge I wanted to be part of.
Over the past five years I’ve always scored some goals but the main thing for me is to keep a place in the team because there’s a lot of competition in the squad.
I will do my bit defensively but I’m always looking to get on the end of things and score as well.
As a team, we’re still getting to know each other’s games, and although we got a good win against Bournemouth, I think Saturday’s starting XI had only played three times for a full 90 minutes during pre-season.
We have started with a good win, though, and we’ve just got to take it game by game now.
It was a good performance and luckily we got an early goal which took the pressure off.
The clean sheet was a massive bonus as well and another positive is that we’re top of the league – although it’s early to be saying that!
Notts County, our opponents on Saturday, also won 3-0 at the weekend, so it’s a top-of-the-table clash on Saturday.
Hopefully, we can keep our momentum going until the end of the season and by Christmas, we should know what our aim will be. Rhoys Wiggins has made the same move up from the south coast as me this summer and he’s a good asset for the squad.
He loves to get forward and is a good crosser in the final third.
Dale Stephens was also impressive on Saturday – he’s good technically and he gets up and down the pitch.
But we both know it will be a hard task keeping our starting places, and we’ve just got to continue performing well with others chomping at the bit to get in the side.
