It's been an eventful close season at The Valley but manager Charlton boss Phil Parkinson believes his squad rebuilding is finally taking shape.

He admitted ahead of Saturday’s League 1 opener against AFC Bournemouth: "It’s been a frustrating summer and there are going to be a lot of new faces in the starting XI on Saturday.

"But there are some good characters and I’m pleased with the additions we’ve made so far."

The Addicks’ line-up will have a different look to the side which suffered semi-final play-off heartbreak against Swindon in May.

The list of absentees is headed by former skipper Nicky Bailey, whose miss in the penalty shoot-out against the Robins proved decisive and who subsequently joined Middlesbrough for £1.4million.

Other popular faces who have also moved on include striker Deon Burton, who is now plying his trade in Azerbaijan under former England international Tony Adams, full-back Frazer Richardson, who has joined League 1 title favourites Southampton and Lloyd Sam, who will be hoping to play regular Championship football with Leeds.

Losing players of that calibre in quick succession must have been disheartening for Parkinson (pictured) but the Addicks boss accepted that the club’s financial situation meant there was no other course.

Last Friday’s signing of Pawel Abbott from Oldham took his list of summer acquisitions to six, with the 28-year-old striker following in the footsteps of full-back Simon Francis and midfielder Alan McCormack, both signed from Southend and midfielder Johnnie Jackson from Notts County.

Back at The Valley is winger Kyel Reid from Sheffield United, after his successful loan spell last season and former Republic of Ireland international Gary Doherty has joined from Norwich.
