Charlton are considering not entering a team in the 2009/10 reserve league due to cost-cutting measures.

The club’s financial position, plus the likelihood of a smaller first-team squad in comparison with recent years, has prompted the club to re-evaluate the value of participating in a reserve league.

Should the Addicks not apply, they club will continue to play second XI fixtures next season, with friendlies at the training ground.

Charlton chief executive Steve Waggott (pictured right) said: “We have not registered our team for the reserve league so far as part of the cost-cutting measures.

"Reserve fixtures are an important process of helping players return from injury and blooding youngsters at a more senior level of football, but with a smaller first-team squad in 2009/10, we believe the commitment to scheduled reserve fixtures as part of a league could stretch us."
