Smash hit musical Chicago is at the Orchard Theatre, Dartford, starring EastEnders’ Christian Clarke actor John Partridge as Billy Flynn

There’s nothing like a bit of burlesque, sultry 1920s jazz and a spot of murder to spice up your week.

Smash hit musical Chicago has landed on Dartford’s stage, starring EastEnders’ Christian Clarke actor John Partridge as Billy Flynn.

The second-longest running musical in Broadway history is packed with music that makes you want to move – and if you have a partner who isn’t such a musical fan, the sensual scenes with scantily clad men and women might pique their interest.

It was opening night on Monday, and the audience was buzzing and laughing at the tongue-in-cheek acting, witty lines and iconic songs.

Set in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart (Coronation Street and Emmerdale favourite Hayley Tamaddon) shoots her lover and along with cell block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, they fight to keep off death row with the help of smooth-talking lawyer, Billy Flynn.

People shuffled in their seats along to All That Jazz, and sang along – with what in some cases can only be described as mad euphoria – to the Cell Block Tango.

While there were some minor sticky moments with some of the spotlighting, and Flynn’s mic could have been slightly louder, on the whole the production was flawless.
