A college has been rated ‘good’ by Ofsted following its first inspection in seven years.
North Kent College (NKC), which has campuses in Dartford, Gravesend and Tonbridge, has been praised for its “inclusive and supportive environment”.
Between February 27 and March 1, 14 inspectors assessed all of NKC’s campuses.
It was rated as ‘good’ in all areas except in behaviour and attitudes, where it was deemed to be ‘outstanding’.
Inspectors found that learners and apprentices are “enthusiastic” about their studies, and frequently participate in activities that go beyond those required for the qualification.
The report states: “A significant proportion of learners participate in skills competitions that challenge and motivate them to further refine and enhance their skills and knowledge.
“As a result, learners develop their confidence, resilience and character, enabling them to make a positive contribution to society.”
Those studying at the colleges also reported feeling safe, and knew who to talk to if raising any concerns.
Inspectors also found that the college makes a “reasonable contribution” to meeting skills needs and leaders have high aspirations for learners.
The report added: “They use their understanding of the skills and employment market to provide ambitious programmes that prepare learners and apprentices for their next step in learning or work well.”
Teachers at the college are experts in their subject and are able to explain concepts clearly.
They’re able to check what learners and apprentices know and can do and track their progress closely.
Most teachers provide learners and apprentices with high quality and timely feedback on their work.
The report notes arrangements for safeguarding at all of the NKC campuses are effective.
In terms of improvement, the college needs to make sure it is providing all apprentices with timely and developmental feedback. This means they’ll be able to understand their strengths and know how to improve.
It also needs to make sure all eligible learners take part in an external work placement.
As well as this, the college needs to develop the programme of cross college enrichment activities so that learners have better opportunities to explore their interests and talents.
The college was previously given the same rating of ‘good’ in 2017.
At the time of inspection, there were just under 4,000 learners studying programmes for young people and just under 300 adult learners across its four sites.
Chief executive and executive principal of NKC David Gleed said: "We are incredibly proud of our students and staff.
“Everyone was delighted to see the exemplary behaviour of our students supported by dedicated staff in great facilities being recognised.
“We continue our journey towards even greater achievements at the next Ofsted inspection in a few years time.”
