Part of the A20 remains closed more than eight hours after after crashes involving several cars.
An air ambulance was scrambled to the scene and the London-bound carriageway was shut between the M25 and the A223, with queues stretching back at least four miles.
Other emergency services were also attended and motorists were forced to find alternative routes.
Police, Kent Fire and paramedics as well as the air ambulance attended and both carriageways were initially closed.
It is thought several ambulances were sent to the crash site.
The eastbound carriageway later partially reopened.
Highways South East tweeted earlier about the incident, but it is not known at this stage how many vehicles are involved in the collision.
Police spokesman James Walker said: "Police were called to Junction 3 of the London-bound carriageway of the A20 at 11.04am following a report of two separate road traffic collisions.
"The road has been closed to allow police, South East Coast Ambulance Service and Kent Fire and Rescue Service to work at the scene.
"It is anticipated the road will be closed for a substantial time and motorists are advised to avoid the area and find alternative routes where possible."
