Mechanic Andy Roberts killed after crashing Mercedes on the A20 in Swanley

A dad-of-seven killed in a crash on the A20 in Swanley was more than twice the legal drink-drive limit at the time of his death, an inquest heard.

Mechanic Andy Roberts, 44, of Swanley, lost control of his Mercedes on the Swanley Interchange slip road in the early hours on Saturday, June 6.

Witnesses said the car spun three times after leaving the carriageway before it rolled up a bank and hit a road sign. The car eventually rested on its roof on the slip road.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Pathologist David Fish ruled his death was caused by severe head injuries.

Toxicology results showed Mr Roberts's blood alcohol reading was more than twice the legal limit. Another man, a passenger, was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

At his inquest held today at Gravesend coroner’s court, Mr Roberts was described as a "family man".

The 44-year-old’s wife, sister Tina and mum Carol were among more than a dozen friends and relatives in attendance.

"He was a larger than life character and all who met him, loved him. He had an infectious smile that would bring joy to all" - Mr Roberts' family

The court heard Mr Roberts and a friend bought Big Macs at the A20 services in Swanley on the morning of his death.

Fast food employee Samuel Jackson said he remembered the passenger drinking a can of Fosters and heard the car wheel spinning when leaving the service station.

Witness Steven Wright was being driven by his girlfriend to Gatwick Airport when he saw the Mercedes “fly” past him moments before the collision.

In a statement he said the car spun about three times before it “barrel rolled” and landed on its roof with smoke billowing from the vehicle.

Police asked him to check on the passengers but he feared the car could burst into flames.

Investigating officer PC John Burley said Mr Roberts's loss of control was most likely as a result of harsh steering or braking. He added it was unclear as to whether he was wearing his seat belt.

He ruled out road conditions, weather and vehicle defects as factors in the crash.

In a statement released at the time of his death, relatives said: "Andy loved his family and was a true family man.
