Erith man Ben Wales who raised money for children with cancer is killed in truck crash

A dad of two from Kent has died after being hit by a tipper truck while cycling to work.

Ben Wales, 32, from Erith, was hit by the 40 ton truck just before he was due to start his shift at Tate & Lyle's sugar refinery in London Docklands on Thursday.

He was said to have been dragged down the road by the lorry before motorists alerted the driver, and died at the scene before paramedics arrived.

A devoted family man, Mr Wales was a keen cyclist and took part in last year’s Surrey to London charity bike ride to raise money for children suffering with cancer.

He was the third cyclist to be killed in London last week. Campaigners today staged a protest in central London calling for increased government spending on safety measures for cyclists. In front of the Treasury, campaigners laid down their bikes and dropped on to the wet tarmac for a minute's silence.

Officers from the Met Police's Roads Transport Policing Command are investigating Mr Wales's death and say no arrests have been made.
