Plans to close two much-loved Dartford care homes are set to go ahead, in the face of widespread opposition.

Dozens of residents at Manorbrooke and users of The Limes are facing a search for alternative care after social services chiefs approved the move.

Thousands of campaigners have signed petitions and written letters of opposition, while some have even argued their case at county hall since Kent County Council announced its proposals for the future of care for the elderly.

Now the politician in charge has agreed to scrap The Limes, in Brent Lane, and replace Manorbrooke, in Bevis Close, with sheltered accommodation. Both closures are likely to take effect this September.

Another nine facilities across the county will also be closed entirely, replaced with alternative accommodation, or sold off to the private sector.

"I believe that the twin challenges of the present and the future are best met by going ahead with the recommendations."
