Every community has its legion of heroes.

Whether they be workers who give that little bit extra, people who show courage in adversity, or those who give up their time to help others, they are the kind of people who make a difference.

From long-serving school dinner ladies to the firefighter who risks their life each day to protect others, they are the people who bring happiness to others and make our communities safer, more welcoming places.

They do not seek recognition, and they rarely get it. But that's about to change, with The Dartfordian Awards 2010.

Dartford Borough Council is looking for the borough's heroes - people who have made an extraordinary contribution to life in their community. And it's asking you to help decide who deserves the honour.

Residents can nominate anyone who has made a difference to their lives or the wider community, and the awards are also open to groups, charities or businesses based in Dartford.

Cllr Jeremy Kite said: "The Dartfordian Award is for anyone who contributes to Dartford, from the long serving lollipop lady helping local children cross the road to the helpful plumber who goes that extra mile with the elderly customer, or the volunteer helping others."

Nominations are now open. Forms are available from the civic centre, in Home Gardens, and also via the council's own dedicated website.

Nominations close at noon on Thursday, December 23, with a ceremony scheduled for March next year.
