Self-combusting paper towels sparked a house fire in Greenhithe last night.

Firefighters were called to the home in Park Cliff Road where they discovered the kitchen was full of smoke. The occupants had managed to put a small fire out before crews arrived at about 8.50pm,

It was caused by linseed-soaked paper towels used to varnish wooden stairs. They had been put in a bag and placed next to a bin to go out with household rubbish.

The material spontaneously ignited, starting a fire which damaged the bin, tiled floor and wall.

In the bottle of oil, it stated that it had the potential to self-combust if not disposed of correctly

Firefighters used a thermal imaging camera to check for any hotspots and they also fitted smoke alarms in the house.

Following this near miss, firefighters are urging people to carefully read warning labels on DIY products.

Leanne McMahon, group manager for community safety at Kent Fire and Rescue Service, said: It's so important to read the instructions and follow manufacturer's guidelines for any DIY product or chemical fully before you get started.

" No matter how skilled or experienced you are, it's best to check the label to make sure you're able to get the job done well and safely."
