Drivers have been told to expect delays as teams carry out emergency repairs along one of the busiest routes in Kent.
Two lanes have been shut on the M25 anti-clockwise within Junction 2 for Dartford, after "a safety-critical carriageway defect" was detected.
National Highways bosses say contractors have advised that the closures will be in place throughout the evening and into tomorrow.
Officials from the roads body announced: "Lanes one and two of three remain closed on the M25 anti-clock within Junction 2 for Dartford.
"This is due to a safety-critical carriageway defect that requires immediate repair throughout the evening and tomorrow.
"There are 30 min delays on the approach, so please plan ahead and allow extra time for your journey."
Congestion is understood to stretch to Junction 3 for the M20 Swanley Interchange.
