An elderly man was left shaken after two people followed him into a town centre alleyway and attempted to rob him.
Officers are appealing for witnesses and shoppers are reminded to be alert to potential pick-pocketing following the attack in Dartford on Tuesday, at around midday.
The victim, a man in his 70s, had visited a bank in the High Street, before he was followed down a nearby alleyway by a man and woman.
The woman then pushed the victim against the wall and showed him a map of London, asking him to look at the map, and continued to speak while her companion attempted to take items from the man's pockets.
They then left empty handed and the victim shouted at the couple as they left towards the High Street.
The woman was described as wearing a green top and green head scarf and spoke with a foreign accent; while the man was described as wearing all black, about 6 ft tall, with black facial hair.
Investigating officer Detective Constable Bill Looker said: "Thankfully nothing was taken from the victim and he was uninjured, but understandably shaken up by the incident.
"We are appealing for witnesses, in particular we understand there were people near the alleyway who might have seen something was amiss, and we ask them to get in contact with us as they may have information which could assist our enquiries."
Police are also advising people to keep bags within your sight and closed at all times when out in public.
DC Looker added: "Use a purse chain to secure your purse to your bag – these are available from Dartford Contact Point and other police stations.
"Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you."
Any witnesses are asked to contact Kent Police on 01474 366149 quoting XY/27889/17 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
