In a statement, it said: “We have taken the hard decision to finally close Ali’s Plaice.

“Without the close community we have around the shops a small business like ours would never have survived for the past 37 plus years.

“All of us at Ali’s Plaice want to say a massive thank you for all your friendship and custom throughout the years.”

The shop sold traditional fish and chips, doner kebabs, burgers and pies.

Posting on social media, one woman expressed her sadness at the news, saying: “Best chip shop around. I’m 41 now and have always used it, I remember getting my 50p portion of chips as a kid at weekends and after school.

“It will be very missed, such a shame, it’s the end of an era.”

Another person said: “So sad. I used to get my school lunch from there back in the day.”

While one man said: “Good luck with your next chapter, thank you for constant friendliness and great tasting food.”

It is not yet known what will be replacing the shop.
