The future of a village’s only doctors surgery is uncertain with GPs set to leave the practice next month.
West Kingsdown Medical Centre will no longer provide GP appointments after February, 26, as Dr Thomas Reichhelm and his partners decided to end their contract at the practice.
The surgeries serve 4,000 people and villagers have expressed their concerns about the closure on social media.
Debbie Emptage, 45, has lived in the village for 10 years.
The mum-of-two has set up a Facebook group to try and save the medical centre, within two days it had more than 90 members join.
Mrs Emptage said: “The closure will have a massive impact to West Kingsdown residents and the surrounding villages by putting pressure on already overbooked surgeries. The surgery has its problems but that shouldn’t mean we lose the facility, it should be the job of the Primary Care Trust to make it work.
“Local residents suffer from a poor public transport system and the walk in centre proposed as an alternative is not serviced by a bus service from the village so anyone without a car will have no access to medical services unless they use private transportation.”
Chairman of West Kingsdown parish council, Cllr Martin Stoneham, said: “I am a patient of the practice I think we are all very concerned that we might lose the practice. It is a very important part of the village.
“We have got a larger than average amount of elderly people living here and they need more medical attention.
“There is another medical centre about a mile or two down the road in Farningham but they are, for all intents and purposes, full up.”
He also said it would be difficult for some elderly patients to travel to other centres and that some needed house calls, which would pull doctors away from other surgeries for longer periods of time.
Michael Fallon, Sevenoaks MP, said: “I am concerned about the situation facing the residents of West Kingsdown.
“I have received representations from a number of constituents, whom I have advised to participate in the current consultation process.
“I have also written to NHS England to request further information on the subject.”
A NHS England South spokesman said: “Our priority is to ensure that all West Kingsdown Medical Centre patients have ongoing access to local GP services following the decision by Dr Thomas Reichhelm and partners to end their contract to provide services at the practice.
“We have written to the surgery’s patients to reassure them that we are working to secure alternative arrangements for their care after February 26, 2016, which is the last day that Dr Reichhelm and partners will be providing appointments at the practice.
“We have asked patients for their feedback which will be taken into account in reaching a final decision about how to guarantee their future care. We will update patients about this as soon as we can.”
