What is the first thing you do when you step off the plane from the Rio Olympics? Get a cheeky Nando’s of course.
Team GB athletics captain Adam Gemili clearly worked up an appetite during the games as he visited his local Crayford branch just hours after landing back in the UK - and he made the most of his black card, which entitles the holder to free food.
The Dartford sprint star ordered flame-grilled peri chicken, mushy peas, a pitta wrap and perinaise sauce but had his eyes firmly stuck on the prize as there wasn’t a peri chip or grain of spicy rice in sight.
He checked into the restaurant on Twitter and said: “Got my priorities sorted straight off the plane. Chicken fix!”
The 22-year-old Olympian missed out on bringing home a medal by three thousandths of a second after a photo-finish with France’s Christophe Lemaitre.
He may have returned to Britain empty-handed, but the Dartford runner is full of determination with his eyes now set on next summer’s World Championships in London.
A visibly emotional Gemili said: “We have a big year next year with London and I can’t wait to get out there and put this right, as I’m so gutted.
“I wanted to get that medal not just for myself but for my whole team so I gave it my all. It is going to take me a little while to get over.”
"I will use this heartbreak as fuel and will be back stronger in years to come" - Gemili
He then took to Instagram to reflect on the events of Rio. He wrote: “Fourth place in an Olympic Games, missing out on a medal by 0.003 of a second. It’s tough to comprehend but this is part of the sport I’m in.
“Lots of people said it would take a miracle for me to even be in the mix with the best in the world but with the support and love of my team around me, we proved them wrong.
“I have had an overwhelming amount of support from everyone out there and I just want to thank you all for the love you have shown me.
“It’s extremely humbling and I feel so proud to represent our great nation."
Spirits were high when the entire team landed back in the UK on Tuesday, singing the national anthem on board the gold-tipped plane and sporting their haul of 27 gold medals.
