Could the next big name in clothing be born out of north Kent?
It sounds ambitious, but that’s the goal of a trio of pals working out of Crossways Business Park who have set up their own fashion line.
Dark Peach Clothing has recently gone live and is hoping to attract youngsters with its urban-inspired range, with all artwork hand-drawn by Jamie-Lee Greene, 32, Gurpreet Bedi, 33, and George Cocks, 24.
The brand has been long in the making, Jamie-Lee describing it as “a joke, which turned into an idea, which turned into a passion”.
“I used to work for a loans company and one of the things I would tell my team was ‘Say something, say nothing’,” he said.
“Someone on my team said I should get a T-shirt printed with it on and I sold about 17 of them for £20 per top. People really liked it and one of the guys said I should start my own clothing company.”
“We looked at the market and saw a niche – there is a lack of character in clothing now, so all of our designs are hand-drawn by us" Jamie-Lee Greene
Once Gurpreet and George – from Gravesend and Welling respectively – were on board, it was time to come up with a name and identify a niche.
The first conundrum was creatively handled by Jamie-Lee’s niece, with his own childhood the inspiration for the latter.
“We looked at the market and saw a niche – there is a lack of character in clothing now, so all of our designs are hand-drawn by us,” he said.
“I have always liked clothing and take inspiration from Dragonball Z and Street Fighter – stuff that reminds me of my childhood.”
All of the clothing is produced in Blackburn and hats, T-shirts and sweaters are available to buy online, but the team are hoping to expand with more products and different designs.
They are also keen to attract a famous face to endorse and represent their brand in the hope they can make a living from it.
Jamie-Lee, who describes himself as Croydon born and bred but now calls Dartford his home, has already received some positive feedback from rapper Stormzy and former Britain’s Got Talent duo J-Unity.
“We are just getting ourselves out there at the moment and it has taken almost two years to get to where we are,” he said.
“I do well for myself, but I want this to become my main source of income.
“I am my biggest critic and I am trying to build a foundation for my niece and nephew that I can pass on to them at some point.
“We look at it as a project. I would like it to get to the point where we are at the forefront of people’s minds when they think about urban alternative clothing.”
