Giant leap helps children's ward at Darent Valley Hospital, Dartford

They were raising money for a “magic carpet”, and may have wished one was at hand as they prepared to leap from a plane in tandem skydives.

The team of nine daredevils performed their charity jump in aid of an appeal to buy a hi-tech sensory learning tool for young patients at Darent Valley Hospital.

The “carpet” is made up of interactive images and games projected on to the floor and can be used by all ages and abilities.

It will be particularly useful for young patients restricted to bed or a wheelchair, as well as a great distraction for children who require an invasive procedure.

The skydive at Headcorn Aerodrome was the latest in a number of activities organised by staff on Willow Ward to help towards the £8,000 cost.

One of those taking a giant leap was play specialist Claire Peirson. She said: “I have always wanted to do a sky dive, but I wanted to do it for something worthwhile and personal, so when it was suggested doing it for the Magic Carpet Appeal, I ‘jumped’ at the chance.

“The weather was perfect for a jump, with blue skies and a few clouds. After we had all had our training we took to the skies. Once we reached 12,000ft myself, my instructor Chris Lynch and photographer Sam all edged towards the door and in no time we were falling.

“I followed Chris’s instructions and had the time of my life. At 11,000ft we were playing rock, paper, scissors on the way down.

“We continued to hurtle through the air at 120mph, head-bombing clouds. It was exhilarating and unfortunately all over in three to four minutes.

“As soon as we landed I just wanted to do it again. It was best life experience I have ever had, everyone should try it.” Claire was joined by fellow appeal skydivers Vikki Leeds, Max Hanson, Lara Williams, Samantha Day, Chloe Gaites, Hannah Perkins, Katie Gear and Graham Harvey.

She is now planning another jump in August, but this time taking her play specialist colleague Donna Day along with her.

The hospital thanked all the skydivers and their sponsors for raising more than £5,000 for the appeal.
