The time has come to give yourself over to absolute pleasure and delight in the sin and the madness of everyone’s favourite alien transvestite.
Dr Frank-N-Furter has landed in Dartford, to tantalise and corrupt in Richard O’Brien’s Rocky Horror Show.
It’s hard to decide with this cult classic, if the play or the audience is the most entertaining part. The 1973 parody tribute to the science fiction and horror B movies from previous decades was initially critically panned, until the audience got involved.
Now, the to-and-fro with the narrator has created a pantomime for adults.
Adults of all ages packed out The Orchard Theatre on Monday night, and in true fan style many came dressed up in corsets and lingerie, and were armed with glow sticks.
One group even went to the trouble of bringing and entire string of fairy lights.
If you’ve seen the play or the film before, you know exactly when you’re in for, and this performance delivers.
But if you, like my utterly unprepared guest, are a Rocky newbie then strap in - literally if you like - and get ready for something like you’ve never seen before.
‘Loud, raunchy, funny, and weird’ was how I described the performance to him.
But he couldn’t believe his ears and eyes as the show went on, from shock and embarrassment, to getting on our feet to do the Time Warp (again) and being doubled over with laughter. A night with Dr Frank-N-Further is certainly one you’ll never forget.
But don’t worry if you don’t know the audience quips, the one liners that fire back to the actors and leave the auditorium in hysterics. Others will know, I guarantee it.
Rocky Horror isn’t just a play, it’s an experience.
So ‘swim the warm waters of sins of the flesh’, meet the sweet transvestite from Transsexual Transylvania, and go on a very strange journey.
The show is at the Orchard until Saturday, June 11.
The plot centres around a young engaged couple, Janet and Brad, whose car breaks down and they seek help in a nearby castle.
Dr Frank N. Furter, an apparent mad scientist who actually is an alien transvestite, is head of the house. He creates a living muscle man in his laboratory and also seduces the couple.
