Fires on Dartford Heath believed to be deliberately started by youths

A series of fires across an area of heathland last night are believed to have been deliberately started by a group of youths.

Firefighters were called to six different areas of fire across Dartford Heath last night. It is believed these fires were started deliberately by youths seen in the area.

They were called to the heath just before 7pm. Crews tackled the fires using a hose reel, flex-packs and beaters. They left the scene close to 8pm.

Every year, thousands of acres of countryside and wildlife habitats are destroyed by fire. Dry weather can make conditions extremely dangerous as grass fires can get out of hand very quickly, cause extensive damage and tie up resources which could be needed elsewhere for house fires or car crashes where lives may be at risk.

Grass and crop fires can travel very quickly and change direction without warning, and the fire service advise that if anyone spots a fire while outdoors, to call 999 as early as possible.

A KFRS spokesman said: "An early call could mean the difference between a small, easily controllable fire and a widespread, devastating fire.

"It can be hard to give the location for an outdoor fire, so please mention any landmarks that you can see such as pubs or churches in the area."

Any information on fire setting activities and those responsible, can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
