The Prep Rooms opens dentist, health centre, hairdressers and nail salon in Cherry Orchard, Castle Hill, Ebbsfleet Garden City

A businessman says he has built a “one-stop shop” for residents of a new-build development including a health centre and dentist.

Sam Bott asked 800 people in Castle Hill, part of Ebbsfleet Garden City, what was missing from their community and came up with the idea of The Prep Rooms.

He said it came about when we saw there was a vacant unit along the small parade of shops in Cherry Orchard.

The 38-year-old added: “First I was quite shocked that it had not been taken at the time and I approached the landlord and said ‘Is there any possibility that we can look at taking on the unit?’

“They said ‘Definitely but what would you put in there?’ I said I think it would be really good as it is a new, thriving community down here to actually ask the community what they would want in this space.

“We had two months of surveys with the local community and it came back that they wanted a dental service, GP service, beauty aesthetics, and nails and hair.

“I have just put all those services under one roof and called it The Prep Rooms and here we are.

“We have had a really good response from the community and the wider community as well. I think the word has travelled that these kind of services are needed.”

Sam, who also owns a construction company, has spent around £300,000 transforming the space from bare, concrete walls and floors to create The Prep Rooms.

The 1,600sq ft unit will have one GP room, two beauty aesthetic rooms and two dental suites with a nail bar and hair salon.

The 38-year-old added: “It has been really well received because I think sometimes people are moving to these new developments that are being built, buying a lovely newly built house and looking to register with a local GP or dental or even just getting a set of nails done or their hair.

“But they are actually coming here and there is nothing on this development. We have got 4,000 odd units here now and there is not a lot of amenities around here.

“People now do not have to get in their car and travel somewhere. They can walk around the development and come and use these services.

“It is very much a one-stop shop, where you can get your hair done, your nails done or see the GP or have a dental checkup. It has been really well responded to.

“We are very much community-focused. It is built for the community by the community.”

At the moment, only the hair salon and nail bar are up and running while the team continues to work on fitting out and receiving the appropriate sign-offs from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) on the health suites at the back of the premises.

However, when they are open Sam, who lives in Meopham, explained he will be partnering with a private GP and dentist to offer affordable and emergency services.

He said he has been speaking with the NHS about the possibility of a contract but as it can be a two-year process, he plans to start with private services with the hope to offer NHS services in the future.

The Prep Rooms has opened along the parade in Cherry Orchard which also has a pharmacy, estate agents, Co-Op, coffee shop, community centre and primary school.

Plans for a “garden city” at Ebbsfleet were first approved in 2014 by the then-Conservative government to deliver up to 15,000 homes.

The Castle Hill development was the first multi-phase project as part of the scheme with construction starting in 2015 and is yet to be complete.
