The Nucleus innovation centre has been bought by Dartford council, in a move hailed as a boost for business.
Announcing the move yesterday, the council says purchasing the centre, at the heart of The Bridge development, will secure the future of dozens of start-ups and growing companies.
Previously a joint venture between Dartford Borough Council and ProLogis Developments Ltd, The Nucleus was designed to house 65 companies, with 30,000 sq ft of office space.
Two years ago it was feared the centre could be converted to housing, and the council began work to safeguard The Nucleus after its partnership to develop The Bridge with Prologis came to an end.
But having completed the purchase in December 2022, the council says work can now begin to help the centre's growth.
Leader of the Council Cllr Jeremy Kite said: “When our successful partnership with Prologis came to an end in 2021, we saw the need to protect The Nucleus as a business hub moving forward.
“This is a responsible investment from Dartford Borough Council’s point of view, and it’s also exciting news for local businesses, who can receive support and brilliant office spaces at a great strategic location.
“Our next step is to work with lead operator Oxford Innovation Space and the businesses in The Nucleus to make sure we’re offering them the best service.”
The Nucleus was built as part of the 264-acre development of The Bridge – the first major regeneration project to start in the Thames Gateway.
Previously a derelict brownfield site, The Bridge was envisioned as a vibrant, environmentally-friendly community for families to live, work and thrive.
While that vision had been threatened by uncertainty surrounding The Nucleus, it's hoped its purchase will bring further progress.
Jo Stevens, MD at Oxford Innovation Space said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Dartford Borough Council on fostering a dynamic and entrepreneurial environment in the region.
"The Nucleus continues to provide a unique space for start-ups and businesses to connect, collaborate and grow, driving economic development and job creation in the area.
“We look forward to being able to support more innovative new businesses in the centre, encouraging them to grow and thrive.”
