I was a bit nervous before I made my debut for Charlton on Saturday.
It doesn’t matter how many years of experience you have or who you’ve represented before, the first time you pull on a new shirt and go out onto the pitch you’re going to feel a bit anxious.
I was told beforehand that the Charlton crowd would give me a good welcome, though, and thankfully that was true.
I’ve felt welcome at the club ever since I signed near the start of pre-season, and it was great to make a winning start with a 1-0 victory against Bournemouth.
Things have changed a lot since the start of the summer, when I left Norwich.
When I signed, I was one of the first in, and there weren’t many other players after a big turnaround. There were a lot of talented young lads, but now we seem to be getting a good core squad and we’ve brought some good players in.
I know the gaffer is still trying to get a few new faces and that should further bolster our squad.
Of course, The Valley is hardly a new ground for me, and I’ve had highs and lows since I first played at the stadium with Tottenham.
In May 2009, I was relegated with Norwich on the final game of the season, so that was a real low point, but then last May I managed to gain promotion at The Valley, so that was great.
When City really kicked on around January time, I thought we were going to go on to win the league. We looked at the fixture list and knew, as Charlton were challenging us, that a win at The Valley would be massive. It was funny the way it worked out.
Now I’m playing at the ground for Charlton, hopefully there will be a few more highs.
One of the most important things this pre-season was securing the number 12 jersey – I’ve got a bit of a thing about it.
I had it at Luton, and when I went to Tottenham they gave me it as well. I had 27 at Norwich at first, but we got relegated from the Premier League and I didn’t have a good season – my goal tally was rubbish.
I went back to 12 to try to jar the brain and to score the odd goal again, and things have gone all right since then!
It’s a busy week for us with three games in seven days, especially without Jose Semedo, who can count himself very unfortunate with the red card he received on Saturday.
But we’ve started well and we’re looking to carry that on throughout the season, and hopefully we can give the rest of League 1 something to think about when we play Leyton Orient, live on Sky on Friday night.
