It’s a long slog to £70,000 but bit by bit a young man who lost his leg is getting there.
James Hazel, 24, almost died in a horrific motorcycle accident where he was hit by a tractor, a lorry, a van and a car on the A2.
Miraculously he survived, but his left leg had to be amputated.
With the basic NHS leg holding James back from being able to move around normally or do anything active, he is trying to get a new high-tech limb.
A keen sportsman, before his accident James played for the Gravesham and Wellcome Hockey Club and friends and former team mates got together to help James on his challenge, with a hockey tournament.
Four mixed teams competed at the club in Donald Biggs Drive, with the Dolly Mixtures coming out as the winners.
James, of Knockhall Road, Greenhithe, said: “It was a really good day. People were saying things like ‘when you get your new leg James you’ll be able to come back and join us’.
“I’d love that. I’ve taken up wheelchair rugby now and I’m really enjoying that too.”
A raffle included prizes of a signed England hockey shirt and an England hockey stick.
Around £800 was collected on the day, and James is now up to around £45,000.
He added: “A friend’s mum is doing a sponsored run for me which is amazing, and we got almost £300 from a quiz night. So it’s good, the fundraising is going really well.”
More events are planned.
