Jean Green shares her birthday year with stars Frank Sinatra and Edith Piaf so it was only fitting that she celebrated her 100th with a song-filled soiree.
The mother of one, grandmother of two and great grandmother of five, enjoyed her landmark achievement with a party last week after turning 100 on November 25.
Mrs Green said she had a “wonderful time” with her friends, family and staff at the Gardenia House residential home in Pilgrims Court, Temple Hill.
She said: “We had a singer and he did all sorts but mostly stuff from back in the 1920s, no modern stuff. I think that’s all rubbish – there’s no tune to it!”
Reflecting on the highlights of her long and full life Mrs Green said that one memory stood out beyond all others – a Scandinavian getaway with the love of her life.
She married her late husband Leonard in the summer of 1939 and said she knew straight away that he was the one.
She said: “It was definitely love at first sight. I was working at the bar my dad ran and he was working for a shipping company and he came into the pub one day. We were married for 47 years.”
“One of my most precious memories was when I went to Norway on my holiday. I went with my husband and we went on the Norway state railway and it was absolutely perfect.
“When I got home I said ‘I don’t want to go abroad again’ because nothing would have been better. It was absolutely wonderful.”
Mrs Green, who was born in Longfield, does not let her age get in the way of an active social life and regularly enjoys a pub lunch with friends, crosswords and bingo.
However, she said there was no secret to reaching 100.
She said: “I have no idea, I’ve just been lucky I suppose. I played netball at school but other than that, I didn’t play any other sport. I danced, but that was years ago.”
