Kent Police issue warning as elderly residents in Dartford are targeted in new music voucher scam

Kent Police is warning Dartford residents to be vigilant following reports of a scam that involves music vouchers.

Officers have received several reports from concerned elderly residents in the area who have received phone calls from people claiming to be from Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs.

The caller tells the resident that they owe large sums of money in backdated tax and that the police will be round shortly to take items of the value owed.

The elderly residents were then told that the only way to stop this was to buy iTunes vouchers and then call back with the codes. They have also been told to go to the bank to withdraw the money and not talk to family or friends about it.

These incidents were all reported on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Sergeant Martin Sharp of Kent Police said: "So far we believe only elderly residents in Dartford have been recently targeted, with whom some have unfortunately believed the call was genuine.

"I would urge residents to not give out any personal information over the phone.

"If residents receive any call they are suspicious of then hang up and call the company directly by using a different phone as sometimes the person on the other end can keep the phone line open."
