A toxic lake which caused the deaths of a number of pet dogs has now been reopened to the public.
Three dogs, all under a year old, died after taking a swim in Brooklands Lakes, off Powder Mill Lane, Dartford.
Unknown to anyone, the blue-green algae which plagued the lakes back in 2013 had returned and as well as those who died, another seven dogs had to have extensive veterinary treatment.
The Environment Agency confirmed the find after it took samples at the end of May. They revealed low levels of the algae present in the lakes, with one area showing a high concentration, which is potentially harmful to humans and toxic to animals.
A small section of the path, where the worst of the algae is, remains closed and warning signs are in place around the area.
People should not swim or paddle in the water, allow children or pets to play, drink the water or allow dogs to, or let dogs off a lead.
A spokeswoman added: “If you think you have come into contact with the algae, wash the affected area thoroughly and seek medical advice.
“Environment Agency staff will regularly test water samples from the lakes and warnings will remain in place until the algae count drops to a safe level. There is no effective way to prevent or remove blue-green algae from waters like Brooklands Lakes.”
