Student David Quartey has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of Dr Victoria Anyetei.

Sentencing Quartey to a minimum 15 years at Maidstone Crown Court today (Thursday), Judge Jeremy Carey said the consultant paediatrician's murder resulted from 'an episode of uncontrollable rage' and was a 'frenzied attack of enormous brutality'.

The jury of eight men and four women took 11 hours to unanimously determine the 22-year-old law student murdered his guardian in a frenzied early morning rage.

There were shouts of elation from the public gallery as the verdict was passed. Quartey held his head in his hands before being led away from the dock.

Mum of one Dr Anyetei was stabbed around 57 times as she sat in her car outside her Dartford home in August last year.

The 54-year-old was on her way to work at St Thomas's Hospital in London when Quartey attacked her.

The student, now of Humber Road, Dartford, denied killing his guardian while he lived with Dr Anyetei and her son Andrew Thompson at Teynham Road.

The prosecution claimed Quartey lashed out at Dr Anyetei while under pressure from failing college exams as he worked towards a law degree.

Sentencing, Judge Carey said: "He had, by his own shortcomings over the preceeding year, driven this poor lady to distraction when all she wanted was to help him make the best of his life."

Her son Andrew was in court to see the sentence passed.

The judge added: "You have deprived a son of a loving mother."

He also said Quartey might have evaded justice had it not been for the thorough forensic investigation.

In a statement released through Kent Police, Dr Anyetei's brother Jonathan said the family were happy with the verdict and pleased that justice had been served on behalf of Victoria.

Mr Anyetei said: "On behalf of the family I would like to thank the police for all their hard work in helping us to find closure to this sad event.

"I believe that so many people worked very hard behind the scenes and I thank them all."

He described his sister as one of the leading members of the family who always supported the weaker ones.

He added: "One member of our family who will miss her the most is our youngest sister who is very ill and relied so much on Victoria."

Describing the investigation as 'complex', senior investigating officer, Det Supt Anne Brittain, said: "This was a challenging case to investigate as there was initially no clear motive or suspect.

"Dr Anyetei led a professional and relatively simple life which revolved around her family, church and work."
