Lower Thames Crossing event in Dartford cancelled due to national mourning after Queen's death

A community pop-up event that would have provided updates on the Lower Thames Crossing project has been called off due to the period of national mourning following the Queen's death.

National Highways has postponed several public events, including one due to have taken place in Dartford town centre on Friday.

The multi-billion pound tunnel plan, proposed for near Gravesend, would link Kent to Essex in an ambitious 14-mile road project.

Set to cost £8.2 billion, it would be built east of Gravesend and is designed to help ease congestion at the Dartford Crossing.

However, new plans for the crossing have been branded "nonsense" by some people who have questioned whether the project will work.

The team at National Highways had planned to visit different town centres and shopping centres between tomorrow and Saturday, September 16, to share progress with anyone who wanted to drop in.

In an update, executive director of the Lower Thames Crossing, Matt Palmer, said the events will be rearranged and announced once new dates are in place.

Events are still taking place in Maidstone on September 20 – the day after the Queen's funeral, Gravesend on September 23, Gillingham on September 27 and Greenhithe on September 28 and 29.
