Parts of the M25 were closed whilst emergency repairs to the road were carried out, resulting in miles of queues.
The clockwise carriageway at junction 3 for the Swanley Interchange was closed at around 7.30am today due to a "carriageway defect".
There were delays of two hours above usual travel times with congestion for eight miles stretching back over the Dartford Crossing to junction 30 in Thurrock.
All traffic was temporarily diverted via the exit and entry slip roads.
The carriageway was closed whilst it was assessed for defects, according to National Highways, the new name for Highways England.
As of 1.25pm all lanes have now been re-opened and traffic conditions are resuming to normal levels.
