Innovative is the best word to describe Hodgson Pharmacy.
A previous finalist in these awards, managing director Amish Patel has invested heavily in a complete refurbishment of the shop and introduced the first dispensing robot of its type in the UK.
Other technology includes iPads with various apps to help with patient counselling, consultations and for customers to look up health advice discreetly.
The pharmacy, in Station Road, Longfield, has been established for more than 25 years and was one of the first in the county to achieve Healthy Living Pharmacy accreditation, which recognises high-quality services.
Mr Patel said: “We offer an extensive range of services which include atrial fibrillation screening, minor ailments, repeat dispensing, medicine use reviews, methadone supervision, smoking cessation and seasonal flu vaccinations.
“We also offer chlamydia testing and treatment, provide free condoms and sexual health advice to young people. The pharmacy is one of the first five pharmacies in Kent to offer the NHS health checks service.”
It also offers anti-malarial and erectile dysfunction services. Waiting around to collect your prescription is no longer necessary as patients can be sent an automated voice or text message when their medication is ready, or that a repeat prescription is due.
The company also works in close partnership with staff in local nursing homes.
With one particular home, the pharmacy now reviews the medication and treatment of newly admitted patients prior to a GP making a first visit.
The aim is to review whether all medications are required and possibly suggest better treatment plans.
This type of care also applies to mental health nurses in the area to ensure all current and newly diagnosed patients are properly managed. Mr Patel said: “Carrying out our own population audit, we introduced mobility and disability aids to purchase as well as rent, making us the only such service provider in the area.”
The pharmacy also sponsors charity events and attends secondary school career fairs to promote pharmacy careers.
