A man allegedly threatened to chop off far-right political leader Paul Golding’s head with a samurai sword while he was out canvassing in Kent.
The controversial leader of Britain First was reportedly threatened by a man brandishing the weapon while delivering leaflets in Dartford.
Mr Golding was in the town with a colleague posting leaflets through people’s doors while canvassing for votes when he stood in the Dartford local elections in May.
The incident is said to have happened in Coomfield Drive after a leaflet was put through a man’s door.
It is alleged 41-year-old Mr Golding was not only threatened with the weapon, but was also pushed in the chest by the man and had his coat grabbed which apparently resulted in Mr Golding stumbling in the street.
The man who lived in the cul-de-sac was later charged in relation to the incident after the police were called to the scene.
Edward Blackett, of Coombfield Drive, has been charged with affray, assault, and two counts of possession of a bladed article – one in public, namely the samurai sword, and one in a private place, a Rambo-style knife, which was apparently found in his home when police searched it after he was arrested.
It is alleged after opening his front door to the co-founder of Britain First, Blackett grabbed him and then apparently produced a samurai sword and chased Mr Golding along the road brandishing the weapon and allegedly threatening to chop off his head.
The 58-year-old appeared before magistrates in Medway on October 12 and denied all the allegations against him about the incident, which is said to have happened on February 25.
The case against Blackett was adjourned and sent to Woolwich Crown Court to be dealt with and he is expected to appear there for a preliminary hearing on November 9.
Blackett was granted bail until then.
