A man has appeared in court charged with two counts of attempted murder after two members of staff suffered serious injuries at a mental health centre.

Myha Grant, 30, of no fixed address, was arrested at the Bracton Centre in Dartford after police were called to a disturbance at just before midday on Sunday.

He appeared before Medway magistrates this morning via video link from a police station.

Grant is also accused of one count of arson with intent to endanger life after a fire broke out at the centre at around the same time.

It is alleged he stabbed both members of staff multiple times - one of them at least 10 times - with a knife from a kitchen area where food was being prepared, the court heard. He is then said to have set light to some papers.

Although police have officially given his details as no fixed address, Grant said in court he was from Ellison Road, Streatham.

He was remanded in custody until August 16, when he will appear at Maidstone Crown Court.

No pleas were entered in relation to the charges.

The injured staff are both men and were taken to King's College Hospital in London with injuries "consistent with a stabbing".

Two air ambulances were spotted taking off from nearby Bexley Park at just after 12.30pm and the men remain in a serious but stable condition.

The air ambulance mission reports reveal that one suffered injuries to his chest, stomach and upper arm, the other to his upper and lower arm, lower leg, chest and stomach.

A spokesman for the NHS Oxleas Foundation Trust, which runs the centre in Bracton Lane, said they were offering support to the families of both men.

They said: "We are offering support to patients and staff affected by the incident, and to the families of our two colleagues who were directly involved."

Three fire engines were called and the blaze was extinguished within half an hour. A pressure fan was used to clear the smoke.

The incident was contained within the centre and there was no risk to the wider public.
