Police appeal after man 'uses false identity' to meet Swanley teenager

An investigation has been launched after a man reportedly used another person’s identity to meet a 17-year-old girl in Swanley.

Police were called on Saturday after the teenager was contacted over the internet by someone she believed to be one of her friends.

She arranged to meet them in Pinks Hill and, at about 8.45pm, walked to a white VW Golf and got into the passenger seat.

It was at this point she realised she didn't know the driver and jumped out of the car.

On returning home, the teenager checked with the friend she thought she had been meeting, who confirmed they hadn't been in contact with her to arrange anything.

The driver is described as an Asian man, in his early 20s, slim and with short black curly hair and a beard. He was wearing a dark, long-sleeved top.

District commander chief inspector Nick Finnis said: "It is very important that people take care when using social media as people are not always who they say they are.

"Set your social media accounts to ‘private’ and remember that every time you update apps on your phone, they can reset your privacy settings; making your profile public.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses or anybody with dashcam footage who was in the Pinks Hill area of Swanley between 8.30pm and 9pm on Saturday to contact them.

Anyone with information should call 01622 604100, quoting crime reference 46/72100/19, or to remain anonymous Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
