A suspect is being quizzed by murder detectives after a man was attacked in a park in Crayford.
Police were called by police at 4.20pm on Friday to Cray Gardens near the The Parade Fish Bar on Crayford Way and found an unresponsive 41-year-old.
He was taken to hospital by London's Air Ambulance, which landed in Hall Place, in a critical condition and died yesterday afternoon.
His family were present and are being supported by specialist officers.
A post-mortem examination will be held in due course.
One woman who saw emergency services arrive said: "Sickening I just missed it but saw the police arriving from a distance as I was walking to Iceland on the high street.
"So sad for the family. RIEP for the man. This is not good for Crayford."
Another witness explained how there was around five police who were still at the scene last night when he drove past.
He said: "The park was ringed off by police as I went past on route to get a curry.
"It is shocking and so out of character for usually peaceful Crayford.
"I was told the paramedics got into an awaiting police car as the helicopter landed in a field around half a mile from the centre of town."
A 42-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of murder yesterday and remains in custody.
Inquiries into the circumstances continue and the park remains taped off.
Witnesses or anyone with information is asked to call police via 101 quoting reference CAD 5028/19June.
