Community members have left tributes at a recreation ground after a much-loved pooch was killed by a Staffordshire Bull Terrier.
Nyree Nayler’s family was devastated when eight-year-old Milo was set upon by the larger dog and “killed instantly”.
The black Chorkie – a Chihuahua and Yorkie cross – was walking around Stone Recreation Ground at around 7pm on October 24, with Ms Nayler’s son when it was attacked by a black Staffy.
Ms Nayler, a dental practice manager, and her family have had a dog in the house for the past 29 years, but she insists Milo was her favourite.
“He was our world,” the 53-year-old explained. “We haven’t been able to go to work or sleep.
“I’ve never come across a dog which was loved so much. We’ve never not had a dog and I’ve never loved one as much as this.”
The mum-of-two, who lives with her children and grandaughter, said the Staffy was out of control.
She added: “The dog was going crazy, even after the owner got hold of its collar.
“They ran over and said ‘I’m sorry, I’ll buy you a new dog.”
Police were called to the recreation ground in Hayes Road, but no arrests were made.
The grandmother-of-one is now concerned a young child could be killed.
She said: “My daughter often took her young daughter out on a walk with Milo and my son.
“Milo sat in the bottom of the pram underneath her, so what if the dog attacked them then… would it be Milo or my grandaughter killed?”
Ms Nayler described how her pet “overcame so much” after being neglected by his mum as a pup and despite having problems with his legs, was the boss of the house.
She continued: “Someone said to me ‘what he lacked in size he made up for in personality’.”
There has been an outpouring of support from the community, with pictures and letters pinned to a metal fence where the attack happened on the field.
Stone Parish Council posted a picture of the mini-memorial, saying: “We are deeply saddened to learn of the recent tragic incident and wish to extend our heartfelt condolences to Milo’s family.
“The recreation ground is a cherished space where residents gather to relax, play, and exercise their dogs.
“Our grounds team works hard to maintain the park’s safety and appeal, yet continuous monitoring isn’t always possible. We encourage all park visitors, especially dog owners, to take responsibility for ensuring a safe environment for everyone.
“In memory of Milo, his family has created a special remembrance spot at the recreation ground. Let us all work together to prevent such heart-breaking incidents in the future.”
Police have been contacted for more information.
