NatWest to close Swanley town centre branch in May

NatWest is set to close another of its town centre branches this year.

The bank in Swanley town centre will shut its doors for the last time in May after falling demand for services.

Between 2018 and 2020 counter transactions for personal customers at the branch in The Mall, London Road decreased by 30%. In 2019 only 17 people used it on a regular basis.

A NatWest spokesman said: "As with many industries, most of our customers are shifting to mobile and online banking, because it is faster and easier for people to manage their financial lives.

"We understand and recognise that digital solutions are not right for everyone or every situation, and that when we close branches we have to make sure that no one is left behind.

"We take our responsibility seriously to support the people who face challenges in moving online, so we are investing to provide them with support and alternatives that work for them."

But Laura Trott MP for Sevenoaks and Swanley has since raised her concerns over the closure.

In a statement, she said: "They have advised that the nearest branches will then be in Sidcup and Orpington, however I do not believe these are convenient for residents – especially the elderly, the vulnerable or those without a car.

"To assist customers, there is an agreement with the Post Office for NatWest customers to use the post office to pay in and withdraw cash. A customer support team will also be on hand to provide tailored practical support to customers in vulnerable situations.

"However, I remain very concerned about this proposal and have written to NatWest asking for a meeting to discuss in more detail."

Customers can comment on the plans by emailing the local area director Maria Fisher at maria.fisher@natwest.com.

The branch is set to close on May 18.

The news comes after the banking firm announced its Gillingham High Street branch will be closing in June this year after counter transactions decreased by 41% between 2017 and 2019.

NatWest has also said it will be closing in West Malling in April.
