Over-running roadworks cause Dartford Crossing tailbacks

Drivers were stuck in eight miles of queues on Monday morning thanks to over-running roadworks at the Dartford Crossing.

Traffic heading for the tolls stretched back to junction 4 of the M25 at the rush-hour peak, and motorists heading for the booths on the A2 were stuck in queues to the Bean junction for Bluewater.

Jams were caused by over-running roadworks, which were due to finish by 6am but ran two hours later than scheduled because a tarmac truck broke down in one of the tunnels.

A spokesman for the Highways Agency said the roadworks were finished by 6am, but traffic was not able to use the tunnel immediately because the new road surface had to set.
