A campaign against proposals to sell the Dartford Crossing is urging drivers to "toot if you give a hoot" in protest.

Motorists will be asked to honk their horn if they disagree with the move to sell the traffic hotspot to a private firm.

Campaigners, who are staging their protest at the booths today, fear any sale would mean increased toll charges and the end to any hopes the fees could be scrapped.

James Willis, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Dartford, has secured 1,000 signatures opposing the plan.

He said: "The toot day will give motorists who regularly use the crossing a chance to expresses their disgust. The aim is to send a strong message to the next government that we will not tolerate pollution and an unjust toll."
