The next generation of farmers could have been secured thanks to Darenth Community Primary School’s dedicated Farming Week.
Pupils enjoyed bread-making lessons and a visit from a tractor, with the school aiming to improve their knowledge and understanding of what it takes to run a farm.
Assistant head Graham Ward was encouraged by the excitement generated by the activities, and hopes they will prove to be unforgettable experiences.
“The kids had the chance to sit in the tractor and that caused chaos, and the Year 1s really enjoyed making their own butter and seeing classmates use it at breakfast,” he said.
“We’ve had after school snacks as well using local produce, tasting local fruit and veg.
“The children have been keen to get involved and I think they’re having an absolute ball.”
As well as providing a fun alternative to the usual school day, Farming Week was also designed to be an effective learning exercise.
“We’ve got a lot of farms around here and we’re hoping to raise awareness of how they work and where the produce comes from,” said Mr Ward.
“Most farmers tend to be the same age or are from the same family so if we can get some budding farmers out of this it’d be great.”
The activities culminated with the school’s harvest celebration on Friday.
