Most grandmothers might be happy with flowers or chocolates for their birthday but one centenarian received the gift of a track record when she got a high-speed thrill ride for her special day.
Upon turning 101, Joan Deering was given a passenger ride experience at Brands Hatch circuit near Dartford from her family – making her the oldest person ever to go around the track.
She was treated to flying laps yesterday around the Indy circuit in a BMW M4 SuperRide, reaching speeds of around 130mph – the fastest person 100 years or older to lap at Brands Hatch.
But this wasn't enough for Joan as she could be heard wanting to go faster as she was taken round the famous circuit by Praga racer Ed Bridle, from Linton near Maidstone.
The grandmother, who lives in Surrey, is no stranger to speed and she has sat in the cockpit of multiple aircraft as well as being a huge Formula 1 fan.
She was accompanied by her daughters Helen and Susan, her son-in-law Tom and granddaughter Sarah who cheered her on from the pit wall as she flew around the track.
They drove three laps together but Joan didn't want the day to end and upon returning to the pits, Ed was only too happy to give her two more bonus laps around the 1.2 mile circuit.
She said: "It was really wonderful, yes, to get to come to Brands Hatch, and to actually go round, I really enjoyed it.
"I watch the Formula 1, I get the highlights on Channel 4 because I don't have Sky.
"[I've watched] since the 1990s, my son in law was interested and got me into it - I really enjoy it!"
Ed felt honoured to be the one to take the thrill-seeking pensioner round and making her the fastest centenarian at the track.
He said: "It was a pleasure to take Joan around Brands Hatch and great to give someone a new and exciting experience.
"To start with I just wanted to make sure she was enjoying it but after one lap she asked if I could go faster.
"It was brilliant to make her day and it’s always amazing to let people experience what a lot of us take for granted.
"She told me what a great experience it was and how she would love to do it again.
"It was an honour to be asked to drive her and get her to reach those speeds and it will be going on my racing CV for sure."
When asked about her daredevil spirit, Joan added: "It's action. Why hang around? If it's there, do it!"
