The head teacher of Axton Chase School, Kevin Stokes, has resigned.
The announcement was made at a public meeting on Thursday night to further discuss proposals to turn the Longfield comprehensive into an academy.
James Carter, Axton Chase governor, said: "As many of you know, on Tuesday Kevin Stokes left the school as headteacher and we would wish like to wish him all the best."
Mr Carter then read a statement from Mr Stokes which said: "I have always supported the idea that Axton Chase School should become an academy.
"I believe whole-heartedly that this will guarantee the future of the school and provide the best possible learning opportunities and facilities for our students and for the local community."
Neil Willis, the school's deputy head, is now acting headteacher.
The meeting at Axton Chase School gathered a crowd of hundreds of parents, teachers, students and ex-pupils, who were told by the panel the consultation period into proposals was being extended to Monday, June 23.
The panel included Kent County Council representatives, those from Leigh Technology Academy, The University of Kent, and school teachers and governors.
Parents put their questions to the panel, which included concerns over communication.
Paul Carter, leader of KCC, apologised.
He said: "I apologise for the communication, we have not communicated well with pupils or parents, but we have done what we promised and listened at the meetings.
"The sooner we can get these new facilities built, the better. We have got to do all we can to bring that start date forward."
