A Rolling Stones museum for Dartford – this is what Labour parliamentary candidate Simon Thomson has pledged to try to make happen if he is elected next month.
The wannabe MP has promised to contact investors and other parties to get the idea rolling.
Conservative candidate Gareth Johnson said he was keen to see the band’s local roots celebrated, but that it “needs to be done well for it to work”.
Ukip candidate Elizabeth Jones called it a "stale old idea" and that Dartford had no chance of becoming a tourist hotspot, calling instead for "imaginative artisan, craft and trade-related business and commerce".
It has been reported previously by a national newspaper that Mick Jagger is keen to open a museum dedicated to his band, but in London.
Abba frontman Bjorn Ulvaeus is reported as saying that he heard Mick wanted to build one in London after a visit to the Abba museum in Stockholm, Sweden.
Mr Thomson said: “The Stones are Dartford’s home band. The Beatles museum [in Liverpool] attracts 300,000 every year but we need an investor and co-operation from Jagger.
“I think this is something that an MP can help achieve in the same way that they attract businesses into a town. It’s all about bringing people together to try to make this happen.
“I have been working behind the scenes talking to possible investors and people that have experience with museums elsewhere.
“I think there has been a lack of initiative in the past five years to get these things sorted.”
Mr Thomson also floated the idea of turning the Dartford Crossing into a tourist attraction, suggesting the construction of a cafe with a view of the bridge.
He said: “The crossing has caused Dartford a lot of problems but the bridge itself is impressive and people do come and look at it. We should be utilising that to get people into the town.”
Tory Mr Johnson said: “As a former Dartford Grammar School pupil myself, I am very keen to see another former pupil’s contribution to the town celebrated.
“Dartford Conservatives ensured a plaque to commemorate the creation of the Rolling Stones was placed at Dartford station and the idea of a museum is old news.
“It would be great to see a museum but it needs to be done well for it to work and needs help from private funding. Stones’ memorabilia costs millions so we need to ensure it doesn’t hit the local taxpayer.”
Elizabeth Jones, standing for Ukip, is opposed to the idea. She said: "There already is one in Slovenia of all places and another in Germany. If the Stones or Jagger wants one, I bet it will be in London.
"Dartford is not going to become an attractive tourist centre any more than Milton Keynes or Birmingham. There is no point beating the townsfolk up over the head with potty pipe-dreams.
"I am convinced the solution lies with training and education related completely to skilled employment ... Why not set up a Business Investment team to attract some manufacturing to Dartford selling it as good value- prime sites for brownfield development?"
