Oakfield Community Primary School has returned to normal operation after a norovirus outbreak.

The illness, which causes severe vomiting and diarrhea, struck more than 100 children last week and 85% of the school's 700 pupils were kept at home on Friday.

A deep clean of the building was carried out on Saturday, although parents are still being advised to keep their children at home if they have been physically sick within the past 48 hours.

Speaking about the decision to allow children to stay at home on Friday, executive head Garry Ratcliffe said: "I don't like closing the school, even on snow days we try to stay open, as we are very aware that parents have to work, but unfortunately in a big school these things can spread very quickly.

"Parents have been very supportive (and) the majority therefore made the decision to keep them at home."
