Officers were called to a supermarket in Market Place, Dartford at around 9.50pm on Friday following reports of a theft.
A member of staff was allegedly assaulted as they tried to prevent the man from leaving.
Officers attended and arrested Jamie Hopkins, of Browning Road, near Temple Hill.
He was later charged with theft, assault and being in possession of a pair of scissors, considered an offensive weapon in a public place.
The 35-year-old was remanded in custody to appear at Medway Magistrates’ Court this Monday.
He pleaded not guilty to the charges at the hearing and was released on bail to appear at Maidstone Crown Court on April 20.
