The ‘War for Four’ kicks off at Brands Hatch this weekend as two men aim to make history.
Kent’s Shane Byrne (pictured) is the reigning champion but he will face a stiff challenge from returning Japanese rider Ryuichi Kiyonari.
Both have three titles to their name – more than any other in the history of the championship.
And both have been setting similar times in testing.
Byrne, from Sittingbourne, is aiming to get off to a good start on his home track.
He said: "My team have been working hard all winter to give me the best possible package and I am prepared to push it as far as it takes to win a fourth title.
"Everyone is talking about me and Kiyo but there is more to come from the other riders too.
"This is one of the most competitive championships in the world."
Kiyonari, who has 43 race wins compared to Byrne’s 41, said: "I want to show that I am not finished, that I can be faster and can win again."
Racing is at 12.45pm and 3.45pm on Sunday with adult gate tickets costing £31, senior citizens £20, while Under-13s are admitted free.
