Drivers have spoken of their shock after at least 10 vehicles were “shot at” as they travelled along the A2.
Police received the first of several calls relating to damage being caused to cars, lorries and coaches on the A2 near Darenth just before 6pm yesterday (November 7).
A Facebook post was shared by hundreds of people online to warn others in the area.
It said: “Cars are being shot at on the A2 along by Bluewater.
“A coach has had all its side windows shot out and one of my drivers is shaken up.
“Police have been called. Now at least 10 artics all pulled up with windows shot out!”
Other people in the comments also confirmed that their cars, lorries, and coaches were damaged.
Ben Lindley, from Borough Green, says he was fired at and hit on the M20, just before junction 4, at around 10pm last night.
“It scared me half to death,” he said. “There was this almighty bang on my passenger side and glass shards were left on the seats.
“It didn't quite go through, but I could hear the glass straining.
“It was on a part of the M20 that has roadworks with no hard shoulder. If it had happened on my side of the car, I'd have had nowhere to pull over.”
He added: “It’s not going to be cheap even with insurance.
“I'm having to compromise my work as I can't get into the office.”
After calling up his insurance company this afternoon, the 24-year-old discovered he has to fork out £950 to replace the windscreen.
Police have confirmed no injuries were reported following the shootings and no arrests have been made.
A spokesman for the force said: “Objects were located within some of the vehicles that are believed to have been fired from a catapult.
“Officers attended to speak to those travelling in the vehicles and check on their welfare, and a thorough search of the local area was carried out.”
No suspects have been identified and inquiries into the reports are ongoing.
Patrols attended the scene and a search was completed to identify those responsible. Nobody has been arrested at this stage and a ball bearing has been recovered for forensic examination.
District Commander Chief Inspector Will Lay added: “It is fortunate that nobody was injured as a result of this incident. We initially thought catapults may have been used to launch the projectiles but are keeping an open mind as to how the damage was caused.
“An investigation is now underway. Officers are appealing to anybody who was travelling on the A2 between the M25 and Bean Lane, or on other roads in the area, to contact us if they saw anybody acting suspiciously. Motorists with dashcam are also asked to check for relevant footage.”
